Chronic hepatitis lasts more than six months and is often asymptomatic early on. It can progress to cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer. Causes include viral infections (hepatitis A, B, C, D, E; also cytomegalovirus, Epstein–Barr virus, yellow fever virus), heavy alcohol use, medications, toxins, autoimmune diseases, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Hepatitis A and E spread via contaminated food and water; hepatitis B and C via blood and body fluids; hepatitis D only infects those already with hepatitis B.
